DECENT RECENT POP
I have nothing against pop music as a genre, but unfortunately most pop music, especially what is released these days, is ear-achingly shitty.I based this list purely on recent and mainstream pop and not to forget: personal taste. Mind you that this is a list of single songs, not necessarily entire artist catalogues, I approve and that I unfortunately was unable to find and add Paris Hilton's brilliant debut album.
The weird thing is that it doesn't even take that much to get me on board when it comes to pop. Yet I am alienated at most clubs feeling like some kind of old lady thinking "Do these people actually like this garbage?"
Get one or more of the following right and you win in my book:
- Be catchy
- Be simple, but surprising
- Ideally add a great little gimmick.
Also:
- Autotune is totally okay
- So is being tacky
- We're never done with songs about love
Avoid:
- Making "noise" - it takes skills to create a great pop track with a zillion layers that actually benefits the track, but if you have them, go for it
- Mentioning the word booty (exceptions: Snoop Dogg)
- Piano ballads
- Being Danish, singing in Danish and sounding like a bad knock-off US dance pop song
I have decided to start sharing mixtapes. Ideally one each monday. Topics will be ever changing and very random. Descriptions will be of different lengths. Suggestions for topics and picks are welcome.
